Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is at the forefront of the fight to cure cancer. They are the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers. Since 1949, they have invested nearly $1.3 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative approaches. By participating and donating to LLS during our collection weeks, you can make a difference in cancer research and donate money to a good cause.
What are leukemia & lymphoma?
Leukemia and lymphoma are easily confused because they’re both types of blood cancer. Leukemia usually occurs in bone marrow, while lymphoma originates in the lymphatic system and mainly targets lymph nodes and lymph tissue.

In addition to originating in different sites, there are other differences between leukemia and lymphoma. For example, leukemia is the most common type of blood cancer in children. Lymphoma is more commonly diagnosed in adults, but it may develop in children as well.

Leukemia usually begins in the bone marrow and spreads through the bloodstream. When this occurs, the bone marrow produces mutated white blood cells, called lymphocytes, that populate the bloodstream and crowd out healthy blood cells.

Lymphoma typically originates in lymph nodes or other areas of the lymphatic system. Lymph nodes (small glands found throughout the body) filter out harmful substances and contain lymphocytes, which help the body fight infection and disease.
How HOSA helps:
To assist the efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, our chapter of HOSA dedicates a few weeks to LLS. During this time, we collect coins and cash from each homeroom to raise money and awareness for leukemia and lymphoma cancers. By donating, counting money, and helping with creating posters and setting them up around the school, you can gain points and also help a good cause!
